The Knoxville Convention Center is home to a stunning collection of art, featuring paintings, sculpture, tapestries, ceramics, murals, glass and art in other mediums. Valued at over $1,000,000, this world-class collection represents the natural regional beauty of East Tennessee from local, regional, national and international artists.
The selection committee comprised of eight local art authorities on the arts, architecture, culture, and history, were the decision makers on the collection. Some of the larger works embellishing the walls include an historical photo of a Smoky Mountain waterfall replicated as a ceramic tile mural and is more than 38 feet tall. A Frieze located at the base of the dome in the Rotunda Room celebrates the Knoxville area with a "picture postcard" presentation. Blue and bronze Venetian plaster enhance the corridors and alcoves. A significant feature in the facility is brown and white “book matched” marble which was quarried just 30 miles south of Knoxville. A dichroic glass wall creates colorful prisms when sunlight passes through from overhead.
Much like a museum, descriptions accompany each piece of art to give onlookers information about the artist and materials they used. This collection sets a new standard for public art in the East Tennessee and is appreciated by thousands who visitor the Center every year.
